Sunday 1/14/2007 Hike-Rainbow Falls

032

Since we missed the lottery for official, planned hikes for Sunday, my friends and I decided to hike to Rainbow Falls just outside of Gatlinburg.

Distance: 2.7 miles from the trail head, one way
Time: 2 hours 8 minutes one way, including short breaks
Elevation change: 1500 ft, steady climb up to the falls.
Trail type: Rocky and muddy at times

This was my first venture to Rainbow Falls.  When I told my veteran Smokies hiker friend where we were going, he looked at me sorta funny and questioned the decision.  Of course, I thought this was somewhat perplexing as we had all been at least intermediate hikers for some time.

For about the first 30 minutes, all of us complained, but once we got warmed up and hit our stride, it was a nice leisurely climb 1500 ft to Rainbow Falls.  Not really any significant clear overlook opportunities, but nice views through the bare trees.

The hike was worth it!  Through Rainbow is a small falls (about 80 ft), it has lots of character.  I will definitely do this hike again!  The trail continues another 4 miles or so up to Mt. LeConte.
